ZONING BYLAW AMENDMENT CONCERNING NON-MEDICAL CANNABIS, April 26, 2018

At the Regular Council meeting of April 25, 2018 Council adopted “Zoning Bylaw Amendment No. 34, Bylaw No. 989, 2018.”

This bylaw adds a definition for Cannabis to the Zoning Bylaw and also prohibits the sale, production and distribution of commercial cannabis within the District of Fort St. James.

Council made a late amendment to the wording in the Bylaw to include a sunset clause. This means that Amendment No. 34 will expire at the latest on September 30th, 2018. This will allow Council time to understand provincial guidelines and consult with members of the community. At this time there is no official date for legalization from the Government of Canada.

Council will be forming a Select Committee that will meet, analyse information as it becomes available, consult with the community, and provide recommended options to Council. The committee will set a meeting schedule that will be posted at the public notice posting place. All committee meetings will be open to the public. Comments for the committee may be submitted in writing to the District Office.
