The municipal garbage service provides weekly garbage pickup for residential properties within District boundaries and more frequent service as needed for businesses.
Residential pickup is on Tuesdays north of Nahounli Creek, and on Wednesdays south of Nahounli Creek. Garbage must be in a container approved by the municipality. We suggest that you set your garbage out by 7:30 am so you don’t miss the service. Pickup times are subject to change without notice. For more information, please view the Garbage Regulation Bylaw.
Nak’azdli Band, in partnership with Multi-Material BC, provides a curbside and depot recycling service to residential properties within the District of Fort St. James. Please see the guide for details of materials accepted and pickup schedule. The depot is located at 300 Dachun Road on the Nak’azdli Reserve.
The Fort St. James Bottle Depot, (Encorp Return-It Depot) accepts most beverage containers for recycling, and will refund your bottle deposits.
The Regional District has a Recycling Brochure with other local options for recycling.
Transfer Station and Landfill
The Fort St. James Transfer Station is located on Necoslie Road, off Highway 27 just north of the Necoslie river. They accept compostables and a number of items for recycling, and have a re-use centre.
The Clearview Landfill is located on Highway 27 about 30 km south of town.
Both facilities are operated by the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako. Please contact them for detailed information at 1-800-320-3339.
Pitch In Weeks and Adopt-a-Block
The District has a “pitch-in” campaign every spring to encourage the community to help clean up garbage. You can sign up to help at the municipal office. Bags and gloves will be provided.
If you want to help keep town clean all year round, it’s very simple to participate in the “Adopt-A-Block” program. Individuals, community organizations or local businesses can commit to picking up litter a minimum of twice monthly along a section of street or in a specific area. Garbage bags and gloves will be provided by the District. In return, Adopt-A-Block signs with your group’s name will be erected on the street or area that has been adopted. Please call the District Office if you have questions or would like to participate in this program.
